Grotto in the Gulf of Salerno” by Joseph Wright of Derby (1774)

Originally written on the 22nd August 2014, this poem was an entry for a 50 word fiction competition.

Solitude

Time flows perpetually
Ever traversing its meandering passage down boreal black rock
Eternally encased in infinite darkness
Forever in motion within forgotten hollows of the undercroft
Forlorn, the vastness of antiquity lies silent
Save for the haunting sound of eternity
The lonesome tap tapping of solitude
On time drenched floors.
